are breastfed infants affected when mom is a smoker?

  • I would think so too, but I don't know. Never had to cross that bridge.

  • Smoking does effect the baby, but studies show that breastmilk still is better then formula even from a smoking mom. As long as she is not smoking a cigarette while she is nursing it is still better then formula. As for the drinking if the alcohol is out of her system then it is out of the milk and an occasional drink is fine for nursing moms. If she gets really drunk then pumping and dumping is fine too. While I don't approve of these lifestyle choices and feel it is being rather neglectful of the child giving the breastmilk is still better then formula in most cases.

  • It's better for a smoker to nurse then use formula, but of course it's best to not be a smoker. Drinking, you can safely nurse if you've had 1, maybe 2 drinks, no need to pump and dump. Any more then 2 wait 2-3 hrs per drink before nursing again. Safe to (legally) drive=safe to nurse. A smoker can try to smoke AFTER nursing when possible, and wear a smoking jacket, that is to cover the clothes, and leave it outside, and make sure to wash hands after smoking before handling baby.

  • i agree with Krysta & aeneva...
-- a baby is going to be effect by smoke with or without nursing.. so since breastmilk is overall better for the baby even if you smoke you should breastfeed.
if drinking pump/dump is fine... as long as ur not drinking daily.. then when will the child eat?! lol..

  • It's better to smoke and nurse than to smoke and not nurse. Obviously not smoking and nursing is ideal, but....

As far as drinking goes, if she's not "tipsy", then yes, she's fine to nurse. One drink is usually not a problem, more than that and she just needs to wait until she's sober. (no need to pump and dump).

  • Drinking is so controversial. :( It is said that the alcohol does go into the breastmilk, so why would you give your baby alcohol??

  • is still better to smoke and bf then to formula feed. just dont do it at the same time. also a mom can have one or two drinks and still be safet to nurse. safe to drive safe to nurse
