Is it normal on babies check-ups for the doctor to make her pee in a bag?

On my daughters last check-up they made her pee in a little clear plastic bag.. They said that she will be having this done for her next few checkups as well to check her iron levels and what not. Im just wondering if they normally do this on check ups?

  • That is how they collect a urine sample for a baby, no need to fret about the procedure. I would be questioning why they are testing her urine. I would call the docs office and ask what they are testing the urine for and why they thought it was necessary.

  • For those whole don't know, this is the kid version of peeing in a cup. I haven't heard of being part of a routine check, though. Does your family have a history of diabetes or other kidney issues? Maybe they saw signs of a UTI?
The bags have adhesive, and can be left on under a diaper if necessary to obtain a sample, FYI.

  • The PA I work for has never done this and my kid's pediatrician never ever did this. Yes they checked their iron level and lead levels but unless there is an obvious problem why would they do this??

  • NEVER heard of that. Is there a reason they are concerned about her iron?
