Stupid question but I have no clue... About what age should you let your kids

cut their own finger and toenails?

  • Not a stupid question! My kids are 10, 8 and 16 months. I still cut my 10 year old's toe nails because I'm afraid he'll cut them too close. I'll let him if he sits right by me to do it.

  • Well my 4 yr old ~thinks~ she can do it herself but obviously she cant. She can't even get the clippers open lol I think my older kids started doing it themselves around 9 or 10...and even then it was kind of trial & error because sometimes they cut them too close. Of course we're not very coordinated in this family either! lol

  • yeah my son is six and i tried to let him cut his own nails but he had no idea what he was doing...probably around 11 or 12?

  • Just afraid I was babying him at 7. I just don't.....trust him with the clippers. LOL Okay. We got some time yet.

  • My nine year old has started cutting his nails. He isn't very good at it though.

  • For me it was when they could operate the clippers on their own.  My oldest started when she was 7 1/2 or 8.  She's 10 now and I haven't cut her nails in forever.  My son is 9 and I don't remember cutting his nails in the last 6 months.  I guess he just started doing it on his own.  My 8yo daughter has chewed hers off since she was 2 so I haven't cut her fingernails in 6 years.  I still do her toes but she's starting to try and do them on her own now.
