How do you become a midwife?

I'm interested in becoming a midwife & am wondering what I have to do to become one? Oh, I live in America if that makes a difference.

  • A lay midwife, or a certified nurse midwife? I'm studying to be a certified nurse midwife. You have to get your BSN (bachelor's in nursing), then a master's program for midwifery. There are about 10 schools scattered throughout the US that still teach lay midwifery, but lay midwives don't get hospital privileges, and don't have nearly the scope of practice that a CNM has.
