Typically, when are your HCG levels high enough to detect on an HPT?

I know everyone is different, every pregnancy is different, etc... and I realize they say to wait until a week after your missed period.. but how high does your HCG need to be before it reads positive on a HPT? I know if you have multiples your HCG levels go up a lot faster.. so you could read positive earlier, etc..

Anyhow, just wondering. Thanks!

  • Clearly.. but how many weeks does that take, on average?? Does it take five weeks (which is why they said to wait until you're a week late?)

  • It really depends on the test. Some test say they can detect HCG as low as 6.3-25 mIU/ml such as in First Response Early Result which would be really soon after implantation but that is only in a low precentage of women. These types of test are only about 53% accurate in women who test 5 days before a missed period. That is why it is important to wait until a missed period because they are only about 50% accurate

  • About a week to ten days after the egg implants in the uterus. The placenta is responsible for putting out this hormone so you need to allow it time to form and start functioning.

  • If your period is due on a Saturday you should be able to get a positive reading as early as a Thursday. Good luck
