Do you wash your hands before preparing food, and before eating in a restaurant?

I see people being so careful after taking kids to the bathroom, washing their hands. I seldom see it before eating.

  • Yes to both. The rare times we all go out to eat, my husband and I will take turns taking the girls to the bathroom to wash their hands before eating. At very least, we'll use hand sanitizer before eating out. At home, though, I don't use anti-bacterial soaps. Washing with a mild soap and warm water is adequate. But when we're out in public, I use a little more caution, because I see all too often people using the restrooms and leaving without washing their hands (ugh!), people coughing into their hands (rather than in their elbows, as is recommended), putting their hands in or near their mouths or noses and then touching door knobs or shopping carts, etc. I think it's just a matter of precaution--so many illnesses could be avoided by simply washing our hands and taking other easy measures to prevent spreading disease.

  • Before preparing food, absolutely. Also during food prep, if I've handled any raw meat. At a restaurant, only if I've been doing a lot of other things between that and my last hand washing.

  • At a restaurant I don't even sit down until I have gone to wash my hands. I just don't feel right. And of course, I wash my hands before preparing meals.
