In Isaiah 40:22 it that talks about God dwelling above the circle of the earth and in Job 26:7 says that He hangs the earth upon nothing. How did they know back then that the earth was round and is, well, hanging on nothing. Even Columbus thought the earth was flat. any thoughts. thanks.

  • No, Columbus did not think the world was flat. If he did, why would he have traveled West in order to end up East of Europe?

  • Columbus didn't think the world was flat, he just didn't know the Americas were here. The idea of a round Earth can be found as early as the 4th century BC with Aristotle.

  • I think the real point the OP is making is that there wasnt a way Biblical time people could have known that the world was round and hanging on nothing(so to speak). Columbus is secondary to the main point.

Personally, its well known the Bible was pieced together and shifted around much later than some want to believe so it makes sense they'd do what was needed to make it more believeable as a book authored by God/Jesus.

  • Written by those with a more scientific understanding perhaps? The bible also states that the Earth has four corners and rests upon pillars. The Vedas state that the Earth circles the sun and refers to the planet as the round earth (bhu-gol). I think some authors of these religious texts had a better understanding of the scientific nature of things than other authors.

  • Take a geometry class. Circles are round and 2 dimensional( also known as flat). Spheres (such as the earth) are round and 3 dimensional. The way we get "round" is that the shape is of a closed curve of 360 degrees from a central point. The difference is between 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional shapes.
