  • Jealousy! Pure and simple. Joseph was their father's favorite son, and didn't share a mother with the other brothers. He was also the baby of the family... And when he had the dream about his brothers bowing down before him they snapped and decided if they got rid of him their lives would be better... Apparently they forgot to think of what it would do to their father.

  • Just read this yesterday in my class ... Joseph was niave at the time and spoke about his dreams to the wrong people which were his brothers. They already hated him when their father gave him a robe of many colors but sharing the dreams made it worse however God turned it all around for Good !
Being given a coat like that signifies honor. His father was honoring his son.

  • He was the favorite of his father, and that made them jealous. Also, while they woked hard in the sun, Joseph was taught to read and write...which again made them jealous. What topped it off was the dream he had about his brothers bowing before him.

  • i actually learned something interesting about Joseph from one of my dad's recent sermons...Joseph was an arrogant little brother! he was always ratting his brothers out anytime they did the smallest things wrong, he wore his colorful coat all the time when it was more of a special occasion type garment basically rubbing it in that he was the favorite, and then he told them his dreams knowing just how degrading it was and how much it would annoy his family.

not saying he deserved the things that happened to him or that he was the only one at fault, but he was far from the innocent little boy we've made him out to be.

  • Because he got a girl pregnant out of wedlock? :-)
How could you know unless you were there. I wouldn't believe it otherwise.

  • Scricpture had to be fulfilled...What would have happened if the dreams of Pharaoh were never interpretated...ect...God knew the need and supplied all attitudes and actions to set up the outcome that must be...People ask questions of or about God when there are some things that we will not know...we would not be able to understand with our minds...we live by faith and if a person is seekign God with all their hearts He will not turn them away...a person will have a heart for God or against God..there are only 2 choices..

  • okmanders, that's an interesting theory. Did your dad have any scripture to back that up? With how Joseph's character played out the rest of his lives it seems he was more of a naive, trusting young fellow who just chose to say the wrong things at the wrong times.
And Joseph is a good story of the faults of polygamy. Because Rachel was Jacob's favorite wife, he favored Rachel's only (at the time) son and it caused resentment with his half-brothers.
