Do you make shepherd's pie? How do your kids like it?

Seems like a great way to get kids to eat veggies. How do you make yours?

  • I have a few different methods. The base is always the same - ground beef seasoned and browned, beef gravy, peas, carrots, corn. Then I either top with mashed potatos OR dice the potatoes and top with mashed sweet potatos OR dice the potatos and top with stove top stuffing OR dice the potatos and top with biscuits. The kids like it, I've never put cheese on it, I may have to try that. Also just as an FYI, because it's made with beef it would technically be called Cottage Pie - Shepard's Pie is made with lamb. But I still call it Shepard's Pie.

  • My whole family loves it! Unfortunately my oven is broken :(

But when I do make it it's very simple...

    One bag of Frozen Veggies
    One lbs of Ground Meat
    One can Manwich
    6-8 Servings of mashed potatoes
    8 American Cheese slices...

Brown meat, combine with frozen veggies & Manwich. Fill 9 x 11 casserole with mixture, top with mashed potatoes & cheese... Bake at 350* til cheese bubbles and starts to brown on edges...

Couldn't be easier, the kids can help and everyone loves it!

  • My kids tolerate it. I'm not sure what it is they aren't crazy about, but its not the veggies. They eat plenty of those. I make mine with beef gravy, ground beef, mixed vegetables, topped with mashed potatoes topped with cheddar cheese and baked.

  • Our version is cheesburger pie and it actually doesn't have veggies in it (other than tomatoes and green onion on top) but last time I made mixed veggies on the side and the kids all mixed it in.  I've never had a problem getting my kids to eat vegetables.

  • MIne love it, but they eat veggies anyway, I don't find it a way to get any extra veggies in, just the basic 1 serving.
