I was thinking about this while reading through answers to another question. Possession is when another spirit takes control of your body. And some Christians believe that you have to allow the Holy Spirit to "guide and show you" how things work. So, wouldn't "having the Holy Spirit" be a type of possession?

You're confusing oppression with possession, two different things. Oppression is more like the manipulation that you're talking about but, of coarse, negatively. Possession is basically being consumingly controled or even your personality being replaced. The Holy Spirit does not possess or even oppress, He does not manipulate or control us. His guidance is more like a "hint". He whispers softly so we have to listen carefully and He moves subtly so we have to watch carefully. If we are not careful we could miss His way. Also Heavenly Angels can not do either because that would be against God's will as well as our own.
