Is having the Holy Spirit a type of possession?

I was thinking about this while reading through answers to another question. Possession is when another spirit takes control of your body. And some Christians believe that you have to allow the Holy Spirit to "guide and show you" how things work. So, wouldn't "having the Holy Spirit" be a type of possession?

  • I guess, technically, it would... Possession isn't always a negative thing... It's just shown that way in the movies.

  • The Holy Spirit uses its influence to guide us. It doesn't actually enter into a person's body. Like wind can direct you if you're willing to follow. The influence of the Holy Ghost directs you if you are willing to follow. You still have agency and the ability to choose for yourself. If a person is possessed, don't they lose control of their body or something?

Generally NO. It's only a very very rare case in which someone actually totally under the control of someone or something else...

  • Exactly. Most possesions are actually just when another spirit influences you in some way. Most cases of possession have to do with a negative spirit manipulating or "guiding" another. Of course, not all possessions have to do with negative entities either. I believe that angels and our guides can "possess" us if they feel the need.

  • Holy Spirit is a gentleman and will not force you to do something you do not want to do.. He will gentle nudge you and guide you but leaves the choice up to you.
Demonic spirits are the opposite... they will in fact literally throw a person across the room and pin a person to the floor to where they cannot move.... I have heard it first hand from a person who USED to be a witch. I recently saw a deliverance and it took FOUR people to hold the girl down as she snarled and growled . She is now set free from those ugly beasts. Holy Spirit will not do this to you but demons WILL react when Holy Spirit is all over them to get them to leave!

  • You're confusing oppression with possession, two different things. Oppression is more like the manipulation that you're talking about but, of coarse, negatively. Possession is basically being consumingly controled or even your personality being replaced. The Holy Spirit does not possess or even oppress, He does not manipulate or control us. His guidance is more like a "hint". He whispers softly so we have to listen carefully and He moves subtly so we have to watch carefully. If we are not careful we could miss His way. Also Heavenly Angels can not do either because that would be against God's will as well as our own.

  • Hmmm, I think the mind is a powerful thing. If one believes in something enough, it can SEEM like something is happening.(possesion)

  • I'd say yes and no .... The Holy Spirit doesn't invade and take over, but He will dwell in those who want Him there. Scripture also says that when we become "saved," we are "ransomed" and "bought with a price;" "we are not our own," - so after the saving grace takes place, and we are taken over by the Holy Spirit and we belong to Christ. But this isn't done with force as Shaneagle777 said - God will not force anyone against their will to love, obey and worship Him. So the "possession" of the Holy Spirit (if you want to call it that) is not demonic. It also says that if we are not filled with the Holy Spirit, that demonic spirits have an opportunity to come in and dwell, and they will do it without your permission.

  • Thank you, Ashley. There is a reason I call christians godslaves and Jesus zombies and it isn't out of "bitterness" or "anger". It's because that's what I see. Possession via imagination.

  • To put it simply, no. It's not a type of possession that others think about, as in the Exorcist or the possessions of the Bible. It doesn't work that way. With a possession like that the evil spirit takes over. With the Holy Spirit , you have a guide. The choice is still yours to do good or bad. All about choice. Hope that helps you.
