Is it safe to continue taking my iron tablets while taking prenatal vitamins?

I'm anemic and take iron tablets to stabalize it but I noticed that prenatal vitamins have iron in them as well. Can I overdose on iron? The doc I went to wasn't my normal doc but she said I should continue, do you think I should bring it up with my OB/GYN?

  • There is no harm in continuing but you might get constipated from all that iron.

  • Ask your OB. But most likely you can.

  • Shanna, iron is one TREATMENT for anemia, not a mask for it.
I took both as well, and it was fine, but I was also anemic. If you still have concerns, you can ask your OB, but I have the feeling they will tell you it's fine. They may want to measure your iron levels just to make sure they're within normal limits, but as long as you're not constipated, I wouldn't worry too much.

  • ask you doctor sugar. To many vitamins can have an adverse reaction and can set up poisoning. This is in extreme cases, so balance your vitamins with the test the doctor runs on your blood and urinalysis. You can call the nurse at the doctors office just to make sure and she can check you chart for you.

  • Yes, you can. Just make sure to ask your OB how much you should be taking.
I took both prenatal and iron during all 3 of my pregnancies. If I didn't it was hell on my body.

  • double check with your doc but i was on both ferralet (iron) and prenatals, my husband is anemic as well. so it was a precaution for the baby.

  • Yes, extra iron should be okay.
Double check with your care provider.

    Iron absorption tips...
    1. Do not take with calcium (ie, vitamins or dairy)
    2. Do take with Vit C (orange juice or Vit C)
    3. Foods with iron absorb better then pills
    4. cook with cast iron pans when ever you can

    Good Luck!
