Any good bed routines for 2 boys

ages 11 and 12? Their bed time is normally 9 but it takes up to 2 hours before they are actually in bed and asleep. The next morning they are hard to get up and ready for school and complain all day of being tired.

  • At 11 and 12 they should pretty much be doing their own bedtime routine. For my 9 and 10 year olds, they have to be ready for bed (showers done, pjs on, teeth brushed) by 8. Bedtime is 8:30, they go to their bedrooms and can read until 9. Then it's lights out. No questions. If they aren't in their bed at 8:30, then the next night they go to bed as many minutes early as they were late that night (ie if they weren't in bed until 8:36, then they go to bed at 8:24 the next night).

  • My tne year old daughters bedtime used to be at 8:30. But it takes her about thirty minutes to brush teeth, etc. So I started getting her ready at 8. When you start getting them ready earlier than their bedtime, they kick it up a notch. Atleast my daughter did. Try starting one night about 7 and if they ask why. Tell them you want them "in bed" by 9.Maybe that will work. Good Luck

  • This is the most difficult one. Consistant bed time is not the key, but consistant wake up time. If they sleep in on Saturday and Sunday it stands to reason that they will not be sleepy at 9pm. If they wake up for school at 630, they need to wake up at 630 every day, no napping at least 30-45 minutes of outside play in the afternoon all electronics off at least 30 minutes before be. No TV in the rooms. You can allow them to read for 1/2 hour in there bed with a low wattage lamp if you like. It was hard getting into this routine, but it will work.
