  • They locked my post... I'm talking about voting or not voting for candidates because they do or don't agree with you on an issue like abortion (Which congress can't currently do anything about).

And really neither can states with any real bite. People are just not very educated in terms of what issues are controlled at which level of government. It's emotional, reactionary voting, IMO.

Their fiscal policies, maybe? Their record (if they have served before). You know, the actual important issues that congress WILL have an effect on.

So you want people voting based on issues that the people they are voting for have no power over whatsoever? You don't think it's more important to vote based on the issues they WILL have power over?

  • How else are they supposed to decide how to vote besides the issues? Each individual needs to decide which issues are MOST important to them. If they don't fit nicely into one of the major parties, then they have to decide where they are willing to compromise and where they are not. I have issues that I would consider deal breakers for a candidate if they had an opposite view, and I have other issues that I might be willing to compromise on or I may even allow myself to be swayed by someone's arguments in a debate. Some things I see as black and white, and other things are more gray--I can understand points from all sides. Personally, I don't care WHY someone is voting or how they make that decision, it's a personal thing. I'm not going to tell someone the social issues they care about are more or less important than economics issues, etc. I'm just glad they are getting out there to vote. Just my opinion.

  • I think people vote against their own economic interest all the time, because they are voting on issues like abortion and gay rights. Yes I think it's a shame.
