  • Good. If you support an artist you should pay for their music anyway. I hate free download sites and if I ever found any of my music on there I'd absolutely hate it. Thats how I make money. If you enjoy an artist the only way they can continue to put out music for you to enjoy is for you to purchase their merchandise.

  • iTunes is a great place to get music, and the artists to whom the music belong receive royalties.

  • I use eMusic. They have giftcards at stores like Gamestop, which make their downloads 2/$1. And unlike iTunes, if you ever have a catastrophic failure, you can download your ENTIRE eMusic download library over again for free as many times as you need. (iTunes only allows you to redownload for free 1x - ever.)

Amazon MP3 is also really easy to use and cheap. They're always giving out free downloads.

Last.fm does free daily (LEGAL) downloads.
