  • first of he ready? Does he tell you when he has to go or went? This is something that needs to be child-led. No harm in introducing the basics (potty dvd's, potty books, show and tell/tour of in the bathroom), but to actually start teaching the basics they have to be ready.

  • Give him a little potty. Tell him what it's for and let him sit on it. Tell him to feel free to use to to pee or poop like mommy and daddy do. Continue to introduce him to it in this way once a day, maybe before his bath when he'd be naked anyway, or right after a nap if he wakes up dry. When he seems to get the concept and can tell you when he has to pee, start letting him wear underwear around the house. Tell him you can't pee and poo in them like diapers...big boys wear underwear, and they go in the potty. Ask him every 30 minutes or so if he needs to potty. Set him on the potty at times he generally has to go. When he has an accident, tell him that's okay, he's still learning, and next time he feels that feeling he should try sitting on the potty. There is no magic easy way to get it done, just use common sense and it will work when your child is ready and can understand and communicate about it.

  • We actually got my son his potty and let him sit on it before his bath since shortly after he turned 1. By the time he turned 2, he was only in diapers at night. Now he's 3 and very very rarely has any accidents. It's not something they master over night, it doesn't mean you are doing something wrong or he is being stubborn if it takes him a while to get it. Remember, he has spent his entire life going in his diaper and is having to relearn when and how to go.
