Choline and inositol (both are in the B vitamin family) are percursors to serotonin and acetylcholine, two neurotransmitters vital for nervous system health. Both choline and inositol are used by the body during pregnancy to help build the baby's nervous system, so the pregnant woman may exhibit signs of deficiency, such as irritability and insomnia. Many times, these signs of deficiency are misinterpreted as hormonal imbalance. Choline and inositol are found in fish, dark green leafy vegetables, legumes, nuts and cruciferous vegetables. These foods are also good sources of calcium, magnesium and zinc, which pregnant women often experience deficiencies of and which contribute to skin and muscle health, and nervous system health. One more thing, coffee, even decaf, destroys inositol in the body, so these foods should not be eating with coffee as a beverage for maximum absorption potential.
