Am I eligible?

Married, now separated....living in a domestic violence shelter...minimal income presently. I had a baby and I'm not working yet. I'm filing for a divorce and am pondering if I should request financial assistance (spousal support) from my soon to be ex husband. I know I could get it if I'm going back to school or working but not making enough. I will begin classes in January, but have pondered waiting til the second semester. My husband was assisting me with bills prior to my leaving. Am I eligible for spousal support?

  • spousal support varies from state to state, it usually depends on how how long you have been married, and usually if you are only married a year, they only give you 6 months of spousal support PLUS child support.

  • Okay...if yes, would someone elaborate...especially if answering from experience. Thanks. For example, what was your experience like? Was it difficult? Long and drawn out?
