  • We find free-feeding with dry food works best because our cats like to eat a small amount a couple times a day. When we switched to a grain-free dry food about a year ago, we noticed the cats immediately started eating (and pooping!) a lot less - so the "more expensive" food ended up being about the same price as the junky brands. With three active cats, we go through a 15.5lbs bag every 3-4 weeks. We also feed them wet food (one small can split between three cats) or cooked chicken as a treat a couple times a week.
Most cats are capable of free-feeding without becoming overweight, but some aren't. Cats should look thin, but you shouldn't be able to easily see their ribs. Don't worry about over-feeding the kittens - they will play off the extra energy.

  • I have dry food out ALL the time. I give them a can once a day.

But I also buy only brands that do not list by-products in the ingredients. Not only is it the "gross" parts of cows and chicken but they actualy allow a specific number (I think it's something like 350,000 a year) euthanized CATS & DOGS to be used in the if it says by-products they are eating cats and dogs and that's just sick.

I get Purina Naturals in the green bag, mostly for the dry food because they like it....and I either get organic cans of food or the Meow Mix Market Selects (the only "commercial" wet cat food out there without by-products) in the yellow plastic "cans"!

  • When I have kittens I let them have as much as they want all day until they are about 8 months or so. But with an adult cat I feed them twice a day with a measuring cup. I do not go by what they say on the bag because if I do they never eat it all. When they walk away the food gets put away.

  • My cats eat dry food, and I keep it out all the time. I do check the bowl daily and when it looks low I put more in it.
