Where did the $200 million a day figure come from? and why is FOX news repeating them?

The numbers evidently originate with the Press Trust of India, whose report was linked on the Drudge Report and picked up by Fox News host Glenn Beck. The news agency also wrongly said that the White House had blocked off the entire Taj Mahal Palace hotel for Obama's visit and that the U.S. was stationing 34 warships—roughly 10 percent of the naval fleet--off the coast of Mumbai for security reasons.

The agency attributed the $200 million figure to an anonymous Indian government official. It didn't attribute the warships claim to any source.

Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell called the warship claim "absolutely absurd." "That's just comical," he said at Thursday's Pentagon news briefing. "Nothing close to that is being done."

The White House, meanwhile, issued a blanket statement that the $200 million figure "had no basis in reality" and was "wildly inflated." The press office declined to disclose the trip's actual co

  • That is typical. I wish they could find something accurate and true to complain about instead of jmping on the anti-Obama bandwagon. Ugh. People can be so nasty.I am not surprised that Beck would grab it and turn it into something for his private agenda: Bashing Democrats, Obama in particular.
Lets wait and see just how much it really costs and how many people are involved and how much security is needed and the costs involved in that.
This trip is business, not recreation.

  • If we had transparency, as was promised, we would know the cost, wouldn't we.

  • Actually, sweet, Fox News said that figures like that aren't released, they don't know the exact cost, and the $200 million is a figure that has been making the rounds. The Secret Service doesn't release these figures until after the trips. Their report sounded a lot like yours except they left out the "why does Fox News...." They haven't been perpetuating crap. Do you even watch Fox? If not, how would you know?

  • Because they aren't journalists and they don't care about the facts.

The Administration should disclose the cost of the trip though.

  • Looking at the report that Pam19 provided, any trip, and especially overseas trips by our presidents, are unimaginably expensive, and depending on whether one is sympathetic to the current administration, or hostile to it, the same trip, the same cost will mean different things. Obviously, there are those on this site who are beyond hostile to our President and will find fault with anything he does. If he were to ride coach to India and stay at a local hostel, free of charge, they'd point and make comments about how classless he is. If he flew first class and stayed in a reasonable hotel, they'd say he was rejected by the finer establishments. Seriously. . . this group has earned the same amount of credibility in my eyes as Limbaugh and Hannity. It was very irresponsible for any of those politicians or "commentators" to continue to perpetuate the lies.

  • I found some articles. It was the commentators who did some ------ math and arrived at the figure. It was not the NEWS part of the station. You do understand they are different don't you?
