Do you wear a poppy?

Do you wear a poppy for Remembrance Day? Veteran's Day I think it is in the US, Nov 11? Is the poppy something you all do down there?

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders Fields.

- John McCrae

Also do you attend any services or memorials on that day?

I wear a poppy with great thankfulness to the men and women in whose remembrance I'm wearing it. And I go to the service at my school.

  • My DS school does a wonderful program for all of the vets and their families. The children make a special gift for each of the vets and they pick a different subject to focus on. Last year it was Christmas in the military. A couple of vets told stories of where they were and how the celebrated, the kids had an ornament for them to commemorate the day. This year they asked the vets and their families to write about their time while in the military, the kids wrote notes of thanks and the pre-K and K drew pictures and all of this was bound into little books to be given to the vets. My father and DH sit with my very pround DS every year. We will also be sending a copy to Afghanistan where a very close family friend is a 1st sergeant in the Marine Corps. We will also celebrate the Marine Corps 235th birthday the day before, Nov. 10. Semper Fi!
