At what age did your child(ren) recognize letters?

I was amazed today that my barely two year old remembered almost every letter.. she'd pick them up one by one and say, "A is for ant. J is for jump. B is for bird." etc.. she knew almost every one of them. We've worked with her on them before, but she has NEVER done this.

What age did your child recognize them?

  • DD was around 16 months or so when she could recognize capital letter. She could say the letter & sound but it took another couple weeks before she could say things like "a is for apple, b is for ball" etc. A few weeks later she could do the same for lower case letters. So completely by 18 months.

  • he was three and our store had just finished a bunch of construction, and they had set new, different colored tiles down and we were walking past and he literally shreiked "Mommy! Its an H" and there it was, and H in the tiles. so then i turned him to the side and showed him how it also looks like a capital i . after that he kept looking for letters in all the tiles, but only the one H
