Does anyone here have experience with lizards...maybe a bearded dragon?

My dh really wants to get our 7.5 year old a bearded dragon for Christmas...a baby.

He has been studying up on how to care for them, what they require. But I am apprehensive to say the least.

I just would like to hear from someone who has or has had one....what are the perks, drawbacks.....etc....tell me all about them.

  • I worked in an exotic pet store for a long time.
Lizards are good pets, they don't require a huge amount of care or attention, they can be friendly when hand raised, and with the proper diet and environment can live a long time. They will eat fruits veggies and crickets. We used to make lizard salad, which was lettuce, tomatos, cukes, and crickets.
Everyone needs to wash their hands every single time the lizard is handled. Think of it like handling raw chicken every time you pick him up. The tank he is in needs to be kept very clean as well.
As long as you can handle the crickets and the cleanup requirements, they are excellent pets. You will get 6-7 good years out of them, they don't get super enormous, and they arent aggressive.

  • We've had iguanas (BIG iguanas). They are master escape artists. Their teeth are sharp and getting hit with the tail hurts. You probably know you need a heat lamp or hetaed rock. How big do bearded dragons get? Even if they start little, make sure you have room for when they get large. I dunno, if they stay fairly small it would prob be okay for a kid.

  • i had two baby bearded dragons long ago. they were actually very friendly for reptiles. you could hold them all day and they would just relax on your finger. they're diet consisted of crickets and lettuce, and they're tank needs to be at a certain temperature. anyway they have a reputation for being very docile, it would be the only reptile i would purchase now with 3 kids. unfortunately i moved and could not keep mine to adulthood, but they apparently get quite large. i would keep reading up online on how to properly maintain their cage and possibly speak to someone at the pet store. petco has employees that are skilled in different areas of animals. good luck!
