Why is the number one pencil the #2 pencil?

  • # 2 refers to the hardness of the graphite. A #1 pencil would be very soft, so 2 works better for writing.

  • Its all in the hardness of the graphite (lead). And that the #2 lead lasts a long time, gives a good dark legible line and can be read by electronic scanners.

  • Because since everything has to be standardized, most test scoring machines since the dawn of time had to be calibrated to accept only one type of lead and since #2 is harder and darker, they calibrated them to it. That is why #2's rule the world.
