  • Yes! Children need to be in a car seat until they are a certain weight. Up to 5 or 6

thats not what i'm asking does she need the shoulder straps that come with the carseat(i don't have them) or can i just sit her in the carseat with just the seatbelt over her?

  • She needs to be in a 5 point seat (with the straps) as long as she'll fit in one.

  • Check with your state guidelines. All states are different. In MO 1 year olds can be in front facing car seats but they have to have the straps.

  • You should follow the guidelines listed by the carseat manufacturer. They will tell you how tall and how much a child should wiegh to be safely buckled into their carseats. I personally prefer a 5 point harness for as long as possible. A booster seat is meant for an older child, not a one year old. If you have a carseat that is missing straps you should NOT use it. Contact the manufacturer and see if you can get a replacement set of straps.

  • Are you trying to use a carseat that is over five years old? If so, throw it out and buy a new one. If you can't afford it, ask your local police department or social services to see if they have a free car seat program. It is not safe to use your car's shoulder harness for a one year old.

  • if you need a new one get one off craigslist thats what i did because it was more affordable and yes you should use the 5 point harness

  • It depends on your state and local laws and on how safe you want to be. My state (CA) requires kids under 43 inches (about 8 years old) to be in carseats/booster seats.

Once your little one is one year old AND 20 pounds or more, she can go in a forward facing car seat. These still have harnesses. There are no booster seats (seats that let the child use the car's seat belt) on the market for toddlers this small. The car seat belt is just not safe enough at this age.

As always, the car seat (and your child) need to go in the back seat.

  • If you have a second hand car seat that is missing the harness, do NOT use it. Do NOT put your baby in it and try to hook her in with the car seat belt. This is NOT safe. Toddlers need the belt that goes between the legs to keep them from "submarining" out of the seat in an accident. The car's shoulder seat belt is also a decapitation risk for your toddler.
