Paring Knife -or- Vegetable Peeler?

I grew up watching my mom use a vegetable peeler w/ carrots and potatoes.

DH grew up watching his parents abusing illegal drugs, and since they weren't able to afford a vegetable peeler he used a paring knife for carrots and potatoes.

Which do you prefer? A paring knife or a vegetable peeler?

Myself, I'm starting to find that our paring knife does a better job than the vegetable peeler. =)

Just yesterday I couldn't find the peeler and had to use a pairing knife and ended up hacking off the skin and ended up with only about 2/3rds of the cucumber. What a waist!

  • Vegetable peeler but I use one that is a fixed blade so peels fast and clean like a paring knife with the ease of the peeler. Nobody else in my family like it and I have to have the other type of peelers in the house if I want help peeling vegetables.

  • I use a peeler because it takes off less peel than a paring knife. Most of the vitamins are close to the skin. I dd a comparison in Culinary classes with students using a paring knife and using a peeler. The peeler came out on top. A floating-blade peeler, not the real cheap, all metal ones.
