What are your best money saving tips?

We dont have cable, we share a cell phone plan with my sister (no landline), eat at home most of the time, eat lots of beans and rice. We have one car, live in a cheap rental. Ends are still hard to meet. How do you save money?

  • Buy groceries for every 2-3 weeks instead of every week. Stock up on canned goods and boxed goods for the month. That will save you on grocery bills. Only buy food when you literally cannot make a meal out of the igredients that you have. Going to the store when you don't need to leads to overspending.

Walk or bike to work to save on gas if at all possible.

Don't subscribe to any magazines, rental subscriptions, or anything of that nature.

Don't use the heat/AC unless you absolutely need to. Meaning the house gets to cold even while bundled up, or the house temp raises too high where fans/open windows won't cool it down.

Remember to unplug any small appliances you're not using. Turn of flights when you leave the room and don't turn them on unless you absolutely need to. Turn off TV, DVD players, stereos, etc when not using them.

Buy store brand foods as much as possible.

  • unplug anything that is not currently being used. a tv sitting off for 8hrs a night is a slow drain on the electric bill.. Heck turn the tv off more during the day period & read a book/play board games with your family..
coffee pots/ toaster ovens.. they are used for what .. 5min a day? and are plugged in for 24hrs a day.. LOTS of waist there!
Use less disposable stuff.. no paper plates. no paper napkins. no cloth diapers. ok toilet paper is allowed! lol
try dirtying less by using a towel more than once (once use it on ur body, next time use it on ur head, next time use it on the floor). try wearing the same sleepwear for more than 1 night..
walk as much as possible when going somewhere. it gets u out of the house longer (so u can turn off stuff more).
keep your house a lil' warmer in the summer & cooler in the winter.
keep up with all coins! it adds up!
    stay positive! :-)

  • shop 1 a week after looking at the adds, stock up on things that have a good shelf life, buy only when on sell. use coupons only if it's a good deal and on sale. By produce 1 a week when on sale and plan your meal around that, buy meat only on sale every week, re pkg. into smaller amounts to freeze.
