Do antibiotics really cure ear infections?

I think so - but it seems doctors are getting stingier in prescribing medicine for that.

  • There is research out there showing many ear infections will resolve on their own. The American Academy of Pediatrics has been promoting "waiting" on antibiotics for them. If you'd like more info, I'll try to find it. I am sure I have seen several articles about it in the past 3 years or so.

  • they will get rid of the bacterial fluid, so yes they do cure ear infections. however some kids get them so frequently, that it's not good to give antibiotics every single time, because they'll build an immunity to the antibiotic and it won't work for them. some kids require tubes in their ears if they have chronic ear infections, and it's caused by the ear tubes being more straight then angled and causing fluid to back up instead of flow downward like in adult ears.

  • If they're bacterial, yes, but doctor's are now being more careful about giving antibiotics when they may not be needed.

  • Similsan ear ache drops work just as well. Take garlic. It's a natural antibiotic/antiviral. Prescription antibiotics should only be used when other treatment options have failed.
