Do Sweet Potatoes and YAMS have the EXACT same taste to you? Whats the difference anyway?

  • I thought Yams was just another name for Sweet Potatoes... I didn't know there was a difference... And yeah, they both taste like dirt.

  • Yams and sweet potatoes are the same thing. Just a different name. I think what you call them depends on where you live. Yams is a bit more northern I think while sweet potatoes is more of a southern thing.

  • They are basically the same thing. There are two dominant types of sweet potato. The paler-skinned sweet potato has a thin, light yellow skin with pale yellow flesh which is not sweet and has a dry, crumbly texture similar to a white baking potato. The darker-skinned variety (which is most often called "yam" in error) has a thicker, dark orange to reddish skin with a vivid orange, sweet flesh and a moist texture. They can be used interchangeably.True yams are completely different and very popular in the islands and south America.
