Why do people keep buying toys when most kids have some many they don't even play with?

I'm guilty! But my son is only getting 2 things for Christmas. He's only 2 though.

  • Depends why the kids don't play with them any more. My daughter doesn't play with stacking rings but that's because she finds them boring. So I give away the old toys and replace them with new ones she'll like.

  • Because kids always want, new toys. Every year we get rid of toys. My kids go through and clean out what they don't want and it either goes in the trash or goodwill.

  • adults do this for a number of reasons
    -too much extra cash
-shopping addiction (and when buy for kids, thinking not addicted)
-thinks kids need lots of stuff
-toys are fun, too hard to resist getting the newest fun item

  • Ugh...that reminds, I have to go through all the toys and bag some up for charity. Trends change, kids want what all their friends have. I'm not buying many toys this year though. My kids already have a lot of toys in their rooms and in the basement.

  • The week before Christmas, we go thru all her toys and get rid of anything that is broken, not used, or rarely played with.

I take them to Goodwill. We also do this several time thru the year. As for what I am buying her, I have only 1 thing with an attachment. She has shown little interest in toys so I will not be buying something that she hasn't yelled about leaving at the store at least a couple times.

Maybe I'm a more frugal mom?

  • fiatpax pretty much nailed it for me. I want my kids to have the newest toys, I love shopping, and I feel guilty if I don't get them stuff. I still go through their old toys and donate to women's shelters and thrift stores.

  • If my kids don't play with toys they have, they get donated or we recently had a yard sale to clear out for Christmas. No use in keeping stuff they aren't interested in anymore! We don't go overboard for Christmas though, and definitely don't go into debt.

  • we only buy our kids toys that we know they will play with for a long time. so they have lots of legos and matchbox cars...LOL... other than a few small lego sets and matchbox cars, they only get toys on christmas and their birthdays. when they stop playing with a toy, we either get ride of them or put them away for younger kids. it is other people who buy our kids a lot of junk that just takes up space.
