would you drink shelf stable milk that expired 3 months ago

I went to the food shelf and they gave me milk in 1 quart shelf stable boxes. They expired 3 months ago...along with that I got cereal that expired 6 months ago. my guess is the cereal is okay but the milk...I'm not so sure about

  • I wouldn't use either honestly. The cereal probably has those little bugs in it that cereal, cake/pancake/waffle/bisquick mix, oatmeal, and flour get when they sit too long.

  • It depends on the wording of the expiration date and the product. Most shelf-stable items aren't expired when they reach their expiration dates. It's actually a date after which the item may begin to degrade as far as flavor, color, texture, etc.

    So long as the milk isn't opened, bulging, or off-color, smells bad, when it's opened, it should still be fine. Once it's opened, it will last in the fridge for a few days.
