Does watermarking a picture online help?

Or is that naive thinking?
Someone could just crop the watermark off couldn't they?
Or do most people not know they can do that? First thing that occured to me.

  • the original photographer can remove the watermark with no issues - professionals do it all the time, like sears, jcpenney, etc. yes, it can be cropped off if it is put along the edge, and yes a picture is "ruined" if you put it across the middle, but that is why photographers use them, so that their photos can not be stolen and used. i do it with my photos because i have had some stolen off of facebook before. and actually, i save my photos double, watermark one set, and leave the other unmarked, for my own personal printing and use - that is probably how professionals do it too, now that i think about it.

  • thats what I thought too. Someone said "Wanna protest you pics, get em watermarked". I was like "what good does that do" unless you watermark it across the middle of the photo (and ruin it)?
