Is this appropriate for a teacher to do?

Is it appropriate for a teacher to call out report card grades to the children in a 5th grade class. These are not test grades, but report card grades, for everyone to know. ??

My daughter's teacher called out report card grades to the whole math class this week. My DD is very weak in math, and we have been working with her at home. In any case, she called out all the grades, hers was a "D". She feels bad for this. I don't think its right, because this brings down a kid's self - esteem. Am i wrong?

  • I think it is not good at all. I would talk to the teacher.

  • You are right. You need to see the teacher. If you do not get an apology and a promise that it will not happen again, it is time to go to the principal.

  • I think grades are a private thing and should not be called out in class.

  • That's just wrong. I'd be calling the principal over that and add a complaint to the teacher's "report card". Teachers get graded too

  • I don't think that is ok for the reason you mentioned. The kids in the class already know who isn't good, why confirm this.

  • VERY UNPROFESSIONAL!! I would never do that to any of my students.

  • Yes I to would ask the teacher to make sure the story is how you heard and find out why she did it that way if she did!

  • IMO,no it is not appropriate. The only people that needs to know the grades in their report card is teacher, student and parents

  • I'd find out the teacher's reason for announcing the grades. If it was solely to humiliate a student then I'd go to the principal. But maybe there was a valid reason.
