1 Bump

What size turkey should I get for 6 adults and 2 small children (1 and 3)?

My mom usually gets a 22 pound turkey but that's for like 12+ people and we always have TONS of left overs.

Do you think a 15 pounds will work?

I would like to have a little bit of left overs to take to my sister since she has to work and my step dad because my mom is going to be away this year. We're making dinner at MIL's house.

  • I am horrible at guessing. I'd do at least 15 pounds. We only have two adults and 4 kids and we never do less than a 15 pounder.

  • Yes I was going to say a 10-15lb turkey should be fine. I have a great recipe for leftover turkey that I made up it's on my blog if you want to check it out

  • General Rule is 1.5 pounds per person-- if you count the 2 small kids as one person, you're looking for at least 10.5 pounds. 12-15 pouns would yield a decent amount of leftovers, which is like the best thing about Thanksgiving.

  • I'd still go for a 20 lb. turkey - you can always freeze leftovers.

  • We always get at least 20 pound turkey and it's only 4 adults and 2 kids eating. What's wrong with left overs? Turkey sandwiches, turkey soup, turkey over noodles with gravy.....and if you get "sick" of it, freeze some of it, you'll crave it soon enough.

Our turkey this year is 23 pounds

  • I always go with a 20 pound turkey. You can freee the left overs and have turkey recipes for saves on groceries for at least a week or so.

  • The "rule of thumb" is one pound per person. 15 lbs. would do you good. If you are going to do all that work you might as well have some left over. Have fun.
