is there a thing as too much sex when writing a novel?

im trying to write a novel on 3 different couples and there's quit a lot of sex scenes, while trying to publish your book with sex in it, would it be turned down because there's too much sex in it?

  • It all depends on the publisher, and trust me, if you can't get one interested, keep going! There are publishers out there for just about every genre and range.

One of my online friends had that issue and she went through a smaller publisher for YEARS before she got signed to a 3-book deal by Harlequin when they kicked off their Spice line. She's now on her 6th (or more!) book through Harlequin and her 20th or so total novel.

And ALL of her books are smoking hot.

Just as an aside, try checking out Samhain Publishing. They specialize in erotica, although I believe they specialize in paranormal or sc-fi/fantasy themes.

  • Yes, there is and it could be turned down, yes. It would depend on the publisher and what they're looking for. But sex for the sake of sex - not likely to sell.

  • I think it would just be put in the category of erotica!

  • Start reading books that are "similar" in content to what you're writing. If you submit it to the right publisher you won't have "too much" sex. Spice is a great line to read, and the Harlequin Blaze line also is pretty sexy.

  • Sex sells.

  • i dont think so. ive read over 500 books in the romance department....not usually they have about 5 or so sex scenes, which i personally dont think is too much....and they go by all means discriptive....
ive never read one with multiple couples having multiple sex scenes....
there is this one anita blake vampire hunter series....where she has sex with like 5-15 diff ppl in a book.(and some are groupies) i dont think itd be that much of a problem.
readers digest, harlequin etc offer a lot of these types of books
