Is it just me or are some people really under educated on pregnancy?

Does anyone actually ask a doctor or medical professional questions?  I was 17 and pregnant and had more information. What is it?

  • Sad but true. Actually,i think most women have no clue about anything to do with their bodies

  • I'm 17 and pregnant and I've been reading up on everything that I can but when I ask my mom she always says she forgets because its been a long time since she's had kids or things have changed too much in the modern day

  • Its sad, really. I learned a lot more about what can go wrong than most women but I already knew basically what to expect. Now the only words I expect to hear are "you are measuring big, might be twins" lol

  • Uh yes... many very uneducated women out there. I went with whatever my doc/ family/ friends said with my first birth and ended up with a c-section which I now know i could have avoided. I am glad a friend talked to me about natural birth. I have since had a nonmedicated vbac, and am planning one again any day now!!

I really don't know why women don't educate themselves, or why they actually fight the knowledge or just allow themselves to have their opitons and freedom of birth stripped away.

I am glad to see you are so young and researching.

  • When I was pregnant I read EVERYTHING I could get my hands on. I would read the reputable things, and some of the baby magazines, etc. I did my research and by the time I got to the doctor I had usually answered my own questions. I would ask if I was worried or wanted her opinion though. My mom worked for her, so it was a LOT different than most patients!

  • I knew a fair bit because I worked in a pharmacy as a technician. I can not remember asking too many questions and both my SO and I read lots of books.

  • Yes, uneducated is a good word. I would go with ignorant too. Also, not being educated on what CAUSES pregnancy is a big issue. I learned that there are really really really stupid women out there after seeing a question earlier today.

  • I agree. It's really sad. I worry sometimes about these women being parents. Like the question by the woman who wants to know how to break her own water at 37 weeks. Are you kidding me??
It's not just pregnancy, though, either. I can't tell you how many times I've cringed as I've read peoples' answers suggesting women douche for a variety of reasons. All kinds of horrible advice. I, too, wonder how many of these women don't ask their doctor/midwife any questions.
