  • Actually it's not just government issued. We buy canned chicken from our walmart often for different things we cook. We buy the beef too, it's great in stew's and avoids me having to cut meat and clean it.

  • Probably government issued "canned meat". This was way before food stamps and vouchers (now cards) were issued for public assistance recipients.

  • I am not sure what she exactly met but I do know that you can Pressure Can meat in jars. DH grew up with this and loves it, I buy cheap beef stew meat a few times a year and pressure can it. You make it into a beef and gravy type meal and it is extremely tender.

  • There are lots of canned meats, tuna, chicken, others that are similar to span, like Treat. Also canned corned beef, canned roast beef and gravy, chicken & dumplings. Look in the grocery store next time you are there. It may have meant that where he lived was very rural, and there wasn't a grocery nearby, so they often would stock up on canned meats, also, they are much cheaper.

  • i can meat. i use either freshly processed beef or venison, cut it up into small cubes, pack it into clean sterile jars, add some stuff, twist on a lid, and pressure can them. the meat is cooked, sealed, and ready to eat at a moment's notice any time. it is good for soup, sandwiches, plain, with potatoes, etc.

  • Yep, it's not the government stuff. Actually, canned chicken isn't that cheap!!! It's good for chicken salad, just like tuna salad.
