  • Mine did. I was dilated for 8 weeks, then my water broke - but labor never started... I would fair to guess that although your water COULD break before dilation, it's very rare.

  • You need to be a little dilated, at least, before your water will break, in general. Most women have contractions before their water breaks.

  • My water broke before anything else happened with my first. 12 hours later I think I was sitting at a 2 and they started an induction.

    With my other two my water never did break, the OB did it shortly before I was ready to go.

  • Your water can break at anytime, with or without contractions.
