Is 13 Too Young?

To be left home alone for a couple hours? Neighbors called the police because I left my daughter here while I went to the store, she is 13 years old. Old enough to stay home by herself in my opinion.

  • That would be irritating. I would have a hard time not calling them in for something. In my state, the age is 12. My df's nephew had the police called on him for kissing his gf on the front porch. They were 15. Same thing, old people with nothing better to do. The cops came out and had a talk with him and then his parents. Lol, nothing bigger going on in town.

  • What did the police say? The laws are different in each state/city/county. IMO though, 13 is not too young. My 11 year old is home a couple minutes while I pick up my son from pre-k.

  • Ask the police. Most places will allow children to be alone for a while at 12 but check your local laws

  • How did they know, were they spying on you?

  • Check your local laws. Here it is way younger than 13.

  • 13 does not seem too young to me.

  • I don't think it is. I was staying home by myself when I was like 9. But I guess it depends on the law your state has for leaving kids home alone.

  • In Ohio if you're 13 you can be home alone. She'll be 14 in February. They're really old and apparently have nothing to keep themselves busy.

  • if she is responsible I don't see a problem with that I was left home to watch my baby sister at the age of 11....

  • In most places the law is 12 alone, it might be older to watch other children. What DID the police say?? I wouldn't leave a child under 12 alone, and 12 and over it would depend on how mature and responsible that child was. I wouldn't allow them to have friends over while I wasn't home to supervise, and the first few times I would probably call and check on them a few times........
