How do I get my 4 year old to quit sucking his thumb?

We've tried everything, it seems, and to no avail. Our 4 year old will not stop sucking his thumb.

  • at 4, I don't think it's a huge issue, just if their teeth are getting messed up. Have you tried the stuff that makes people stop biting their nails? It makes your finger taste nasty but I cant remember the name of it

  • My granddaughter stopped when she started preschool. She did not want to do it in front of her new friends.

  • That is so hard to do, what I would do is explain how silly and tell him that only babies do this, and keep on harping. I have seen full grown women having babies and sucking their thumb!

  • My son was a thumb sucker and the more we reminded him to take it out of his mouth or pulled his thumb out of is mouth the more he did it. He stopped doing it when he was going to go to kindergarten since he didn't want other children seeing him do it.
