Thanksgiving Mashed Potato Question ...

Would you recommend mixing two different types of potatoes to make mashed potatoes on Thanksgiving (with all your family coming to judge you)? I have half a bag of red potatoes and a bag of Russet. I thought I might be able to avoid buying more and using what I have, but don't want to make a Thanksgiving jerk out of myself.

  • I would go ahead & mix them. Trust me from someone who cooks with potatoes almost daily.....they will not tell the difference....

Red potatoes hold a bit more moisture, but have a creamier texture, while russet potatoes have a more starchy texture. They both make great mashed potatoes & i think they will go together nicely. My advice, throw in a bit of cream cheese with the milk & butter.

  • I wouldn't. I personally wouldn't try a new recipe for Thanksgiving without testing it out. I'd make something out of the potatoes this week for your family and get a new bag for Thanksgiving.

  • I actually use the golden potatoes. They have a more buttery taste. But I haven't tried mixing the two.

  • You don't need to cook them seperately, they will cook in about the same amount of time.
