i have four years old son who does not talk much but is very friendly has been going to school for a month and i see some improvement but still cant have a conversation sometimes he response to my questions and sometimes does not and have less eye contact also he seems to have a good memory like identifying colors and names of fruits and other things etc. is this normal or should i see a doctor?

he did watch cartoons for many hours a day for the past two years

  • Talk to the school and see what they think is going on. It could be he talks to his classmates. Has he had his physical lately. A good pediatrician will engage the child in a conversation and if he cannot he will question you about it. Stay on top of this. If there is a problem you need to have it diagnosed early. They believe early intervention can help solve alot of developmental problems.

  • Sounds very normal for a boy. My son is 6 and if there is something interesting, he has a very tough time keeping eye contact and getting distracted.

  • My son was just like that. When he was older we asked him why he never talked much to other kids while in kdg or to the teacher - he said he had nothing to talk to them about.
    By the way, he graduates this Dec in the top of his class with a Mechanical Engineer degree. He was on highest honors all through high school (top5% of class) and has been on Dean's list every semester in college.
