Do you know the history of Western marriage?

Why we give the bride away?
Why she's presented all dolled up?

In the past she was bought and basically a prize. A burden financially to her own family, the father sold or gave her away to a willing suitor and dressed her up and gave a huge ceremony to really sell it (her).

Kinda like property. So the bride's Big Day" where she's all gussied up is based on that history. Glad we've evolved. Although I do like how other cultures celbrate the couple, not just the bride as we do.

  • I like the non traditional weddings we have and celebrations from India and Japan. So much flamboyance and dance and the people coming together to celebrate the union of husband and wife.

Never SEEN a true wedding of either........just the bollywood shows........but different cultures are nice to see as a change.

Glad we have evolved too..........sad at how women were sold like property, or came with it!

  • There are a lot of traditions which have been added throughout the centuries.  Like the bride is on the groom's left so his sword arm is free, just in case someone tries to steal his bride.

  • Do you know that wedding dresses are white because all most people could afford was unbleached cotton? The rich people would have red, blue or purple dresses.
