Could this really happen over a show? Death Threats to Bristol Palin?

Executives at ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" are tightening security around the show after death threats were received targeting teen activist Bristol Palin and her professional dance partner Mark Ballas, TMZ reported Monday.

Sources told the celebrity website extra security is on hand for the show's Monday night performances and ABC execs asked Ballas to stop tweeting in an effort to quell the controversy surrounding the couple.

"Everyone is genuinely worried. This is a dance competition, and it's just gotten crazy," one source close to the show told the entertainment website.

Palin, 20, has been consistently deemed the worst dancer on the competition but fan votes have kept her in the running and moved her into the finals where she will face actress Jennifer Grey and former Disney star Kyle Massey.

Critics of the Alaskan say political supporters of her mother, Sarah Palin -- former 2008 Republican vice-presidential candidate -- may be manipulating the voting system in favor of the famous daughter.

The death threats reported Monday are just the latest bizarre acts in response to Bristol's success on the show.

On November 19, an ABC staffer opened a fan letter addressed to Bristol that contained white powder. The FBI determined the powder was harmless but are investigating the incident all the same.

Earlier that week -- on November 17 -- a TV viewer in Wisconsin became so enraged that Bristol remained on "Dancing With The Stars" that he blasted his television set with a shotgun and began a 15-hour standoff with cops.

  • Oh, I don't think it is because of the show. i think it is a way to keep the Palin name in the news, in peaople's ears, no matter what! Keep that name in the ears of the people, so come election time the name Palin will be on the ballot. Sarah, not Bristol.

  • science, Why would the show tell Mark to stop tweeting if this is about publicity? Wouldn't all publicity be encouraged? I think your fear of the name Palin is clouding your judgment that there are warped sickos out there.

  • People are crazy. It doesn't surprise me at all, I recall strange things like this happening during a few seasons of American Idol.

  • Isn't she only getting votes because she is related to Sarah Palin?????? I can understand the annoyance, for she is not being voted for based on talent. From what I have seen, she isn't anything spectacular.

  • So stupid. The level of some people's hatred is mind boggling. Just like the guy who shot his TV and then pointed the gun at his own wife (before she called the police on him) just because he was mad that Palin had made it this far. Does anyone care that much about a dance show? Like it has some effect on our lives and our communities? People are losing their minds over stupid things that have no real effect on their lives.

  • Those tolerant progressives at it again.

Answer by Carpy at 12:43 PM on Nov. 23, 2010

  • Oh please! No one is "manipulating" the votes in her favor! That is absurd. I do feel bad for the kid, though. She has as much right to her opinions, and beliefs as anyone else, and she has the right to voice them, without receiving death threats over them. You can bet your bottom dollar, if it was some liberal looney spewing their poison all over the place, the msm would be defending them, saying they are just "misunderstood", or they "misspoke". But, let someone as strong as a Palin speak ONE WORD,and they recieve death threats, and are crucified in the media. Yep, real fair and unpartial there, msm.
