Seriously. It is one of the calming things you can do for strained vocal chords.
And stop talking entirely. If you absolutely cannot get out of saying something, choose all of your words before you speak, see if you can't shorten it by at least half, and then speak, do not whisper.
Whispering is one of the worst things you can do to your vocal chords (apart from shouting for so long, so loudly that you get what is called 'vocal fry' --a problem that if it becomes persistent makes you sound like you've been smoking and drinking scotch full time for the last 60 years).
Inhale the steam from a hot drink through your mouth. Otherwise, get in the habit (now's as good a time as any) of breathing in through your nose all the time --important in arid places and during the cold, dry season. Because of the low humidity, you'll be healthier if you stay well-hydrated in general. You can rub vitamin E oil in your nostrils to help
