9 month old has the stomach flu for the 2nd time this month.

My ds has the stomach flu again. He caught it at daycare, again. For daycare moms, is this normal? Should I be concerned that the daycare workers are not washing their hands or sterilizing? Thanks.

  • Talk to your ped about adding a pro-biotic powder to her juice for a few days. I do this with mine but they were 18 months when it was recommended. My children would and still will with out the pro-biotic 'relapse' and have the stomach bug off and on of weeks at a time. The doctor said it is because they have vomited and had diarreha and that wipes the body's supply of pro-biotics out and then they are more susceptible to vomiting and diarrhea. Its a vicious cycle.

  • Kids in daycare get sick more often and now is the time of year when all sorts of bugs are getting passed around. Your daycare providers may be washing their hands a lot, but that won't help when yur 9 month old picks up a toy and puts it in her mouth after another kiddo did. It sounds very normal.

  • Are you sure it is the stomach flu? Maybe he has developed an allergy, or something else? Run it by your pediatrician. But otherwise, I would definitely be concerned about daycare. About the workers and if sick kids are allowed to be there.

Sick kids aren't normally allowed in day cares, but sometimes it happens without them being aware. A parent can drop off a child and not tell the workers he/she is ill. Then, by the time the workers become aware of it, the parents are long gone and aren't answering phone calls because they don't want to miss work. The same things happen in schools. Our nurses office gets filled with sick kids because the parents send them to school anyway. The kids say "Mom said i needed to go to school anyway." when we ask if they felt like that in the morning. Some parents are between a rock and a hard place when it comes to having to stay home with sick kids.

  • It's very normal for daycare children to pick up whatever is going around. If you are concerned about how ... sanitized they try to keep things, why not schedule a day to go in and monitor?

  • No matter how much the day care providers santize and wash, the children that spend all day together are going to share germs. It is the same as in a household. Although parents of sick children are not supposed to send them to school, they do. It is a harsh reality of the day care world.
