please help me understand this.

People may not have voted against gay marriage for religious reasons. But if you voted for it because you believe that people should be allowed to marry whoever they want, then would you also agree that a brother and sister should be considered the same way if they want to marry. I really would like to know what would be the difference to anyone who believes it is between the two people only.

  • This is a stupid question! There is no comparison! It's apples and oranges!! GET A CLUE!!

  • Well, because procreation between siblings is a public health issue, and as such any law or public policy regarding incest is the business of the general public.

  • Thank you bluefrogmama. My next question would be then what if the brother has a vasectomy or the sister a hysterectomy. where is the health issue. My point is at what point does anything go once you start down the path.

  • BlueFrog hit the nail on the head.
Once a brother and sister procreate, their children are a public health issue, and that's why that type of union presents an issue.

This proposition being passed is disgraceful, and i dont understand how we can make leaps and bounds considering race, but are still bigots on a countrywide level.

Cant you see the parallels between black people, women, and gays?
Their struggle shouldn't be as tough as blacks and women had. We should have learned from their fight already.
I just can't understand this. I can understand voting for McCain, but i cant understand voting against gay marriage (and then voting FOR more available abortions for teens. talk about hypocritical!)

Every group of people that have been oppressed need those from the other side to reach over and lift them up. It is straight, married, families that have a duty to help homosexuals right now. This is disgraceful.

  • OMG someone is really tryn to answer this

  • please debate this then anon 1013. You are right brother and sister is not the same as man and man. But then again man and man is also not the same as man and woman. So where and why do you find that union wrong.

Answer by Anonymous at 1:23 PM on Nov. 5, 2008

  • if a brother and sister marry, that child will ahve health problems etc. from the inbreeding...if a gay man marries....and they adopt..that will help foster children and no health problems due to inbreeding. how in the hell can you compare the two?

inbreeding is not just morally wrong.....when it comes to health issues it is highly dangerous. major differnce between a gay man or a gay woman.
if you really believe tis the same then im assuming your from the deep south or something

  • Your question uses falacious logic. As BlueFrog pointed out, there are valid biological issues with allowing close relatives to procreate. Did you hear about the woman in Australia who is married to her own father (who she did not know growing up)? They had 2 stillborn children before a third was born apparently healthy. As a biologist, I can tell you the primary reason sexual reproduction is beneficial to organisms is that it creates genetic variety.

Allowing two people of the same sex to marry has nothing to do with procreation. There have been homosexual people as long as there have been people. They are born that way, and there is no objective reason they can't be good spouses and (adoptive) parents, just as heterosexual people can.

  • To the OP of this question. I think you made a legitimate point here. If this abomination is allowed; where will it stop??
