Does anyone have a child with Trichiphagia?

I have a 3 yr old with Trichiphagia. For those that don't know, it is a hair eating disorder. I thought we corrected it about 6 months ago, but I find her eating her hair more and more... especially now since her scheduling has been thrown off with the holidays (she is also severe OCD so schedules are very important) . I could really use some advice from parents that have experienced this before!

  • From my experience in adult mental health, I would say that stressors will always trigger mental health issues. It doesn't mean they are getting worse, or more severe, or anything. It just means that there are some triggers. Once you find specific ways to help your child cope with stress, you can further help her by anticipating upcoming stress and help her work through it. As she grows older, she will learn to identify her triggers, even anticipate some of them, and will already be in the routine of utilizing alternate coping strategies. As she grows older, triggers and symptoms can be pretty scary, causing more fear and stress. You can't cure her, but you CAN make a huge difference by consistently helping her work through things, and modeling this without fear or stress.

  • I wish I had some advice for you, but here's a bump. Have you asked your pedi if they know of possible support groups for moms who deal with this issue in your area?

Sorry, I just get so frustrated!! lol

    Thanks everyone!!

  • Best of luck, mama! Maybe look for an online support group so you can connect with other parents, even if there aren't many in your area.
