Have a quick question, why is everyone calling Obama the new president when the actual title is President Elect?

We have a President right now, George W. Bush whos term end at the Inauguration. Wouldn't everyone want to make sure that we use the correct term and know that any plans that Obama might have do NOT take effect or won't be worked on until after he is inaugurated. I was not an Obama supporter and would be asking this question no matter who won the election. Please let us have some respect for the current President and the President Elect.

  • Because people don't have a basic understanding of proper english? Most probably don't even realize the new President's title is "President Elect" until he / she is sworn in.

  • Yeah, you know, I hold LOADS of respect for our current president. Tons. Obama will be the new president. That is a correct way to phrase it. He currently is the president-elect. Which means that he is whom the country wants in office. We voted for him, we can call him whatever we want. =]

  • ^^ Very true.

Should we call women at different stages of their lives "daughter Melanie," "mother Melanie," "grandmother Melanie?" It's just a title... not a big deal.

  • They still call President Clinton that because he was SWORN into office served his term. There is a president that lives in the White House right now and his name is George W. Bush. Obama will not move into the White House until AFTER he is sworn into office which makes him the PRESIDENT ELECT. Sorry that some people don't want to go with facts but here is a link for you:
