  • It can be a sign of impending labor. But it can also happen weeks before delivery. All it means is that your cervix is dilated enough for it to fall out. It also means there is less of a protective barrier between your baby and the outside world, so it is advisable to be a little extra cautious once you lose your plug.

  • no its not a stupid question, the more it falls out, the more you are ready to have the baby SOON! i dont know why it falls out though or why its there.

  • I had a baby last year and lost mine after about 12 hours of labor...right before I left to go to the hospital. My sister had a baby the year before and lost hers about 2 weeks before my niece was born. When you lose it seems to be fairly random, but be sure you have your hospital bag packed and your plans made when you lose it...something is certainly on the way :)

    Good Luck!

  • Usually it comes out when you start to dilate. Some women lose it weeks before they really go into labor. Its just one of the many signs that your body is getting ready. People ask about it because it can look... well.. a little gross.. and when you see slimy stuff coming out of your body you usually want to know why and what it is. :)

  • lost mine 48 hours before birth at night and went into labor the next morning... stayed in labor for 2 days and worked through it... it just means you're closer to having your water break.
