In Canada there is no longer cough syrup sold for children 5 and younger. At first I thought why?? but am glad they did so as kids were being given too much & there have been less visits to emergency at the hospitals studies show. Unless kids have an infection that young they don't really need as much as we'd like to give them some to help them.

  • i never give my dd meds! i think we are a very over medicaid-ed society! if we would let our bodies immune system do its job we would all be a lot healthier! IMO!

  • The research on the issue has been clear: there were products and ingredients that were 'grandfathered' into acceptance (to be sold aimed at kids) that would never meet the requirements for safe or effective if they were introduced today.

Cough syrup without alcohol does not work. Cough syrup with alcohol isn't safe for children. Codeine is converted to morphine far too quickly for a lot of people to avoid overdosing even in small doses. Phenylpropylanamine (PPA) was found to cause strokes in small children and was pulled from the market almost a decade ago. Dextromethorphan is a mild hallucinogen, in some bodies at much lower doses than others, and no child needs to drink that...

Dangerous coughs can't be treated effectively with over the counter remedies, and benign coughs don't need to be treated at all. Stopping a cough that is removing pathogens from the lungs is a bad idea... we cough for good reason, mostly.

  • Same in the US, none under 6. And studies have shown that hospital visits have decreased dramatically because of that.

  • When my almost 3 year old to the Dr. for her cough, the Dr. wrote her a prescription for cough syrup. We ended not useing it...because she ended up having surgery. But there's something in it I forget but it can harm them.

  • Cough medicine is one of the worst and most useless meds you can give a child or an adult. We eliminated it from our medicine cabinet years ago.
